I can also see how it would happen especially as work diaries all look the same and for sure if I saw my name when I opened it I'd be reading the rest! I do think you need to explain how you saw it though, ie "I picked up your diary by mistake the other day, I think we have to sit down and have a chat about what I saw". It depends really on whether the OP really wants Mary in her life or not. TBH I'm not sure I'd bother but I'd still let you know you saw what she had written. Its very odd to be journaling in a work diary...

Don't let it affect your other relationships, no one deserves to be judged by what someone else wrote in a diary in a rage. They could all very easily defend themselves I'd imagine.

As predicted - Mary knows I read it. She put two and two together. She has now told the other in the group that I went snooping and found it and read it. They are all disgusted with me. They do not know the content though. I just do not know what to do...devestated

The only thing you did wrong was put the diary back in no secret rather than throwing it at her

Thank you everyone. I am absolutely gutted - I just do not know what to do. I really think at this stage, there is no point telling them the truth. One of the girls I am so surprised at. We have been friends for years and have been through so much together....I am heartbroken over this as I feel I have lost her. Her and Mary have become very, very close the past few months. They are all going out as planned this weekend

Why would you not tell them the truth? Nothing more to lose or so it seems. Get it out the open and then you can move on. Otherwise it will fester

I would tell them ya you picked it up by accident and it is good to know now what Mary actually thinks if you. And I would say really if they believe you went snooping that’s on them. Nothing to loose now by being honest. Sure why wouldnt you be. You made a mistake picking it up and reading it but she also isn’t being honest with them. I would tell them before the weekend

Tell them the truth. What have you got to lose at this stage? Explain how the diary got mixed up & tell them exactly what she wrote about you & how hurt you were. If they believe her, so be it! You can't control how they react to it but don't leave her to paint you in whatever light suits her!
They probably would have read it if it was about them too.
