If your big toe was accidently injured, has been turning red and black over the course of 24 hours, and is now very swollen with the bruising actively spreading up your foot could it be broken? And if it's not unbearably painful might it still be broken? Asking for a friend

I broke my little toe last Christmas. Was incredibly painful. When it happened I vomited with the pain. Couldn't believe a tiny little bone like that could cause so much pain. There is no treatment other than strapping the toe to the one beside it. Not sure what the treatment is if it is the big toe. Your (friend's) toe definitely sounds like it might be broken. I would get it checked out to be honest. Mine was very swollen and the bruising spread extensively up my foot.

Very bloody sore. I slipped down the stairs 6/7 weeks ago and caught my little toe on the bannister and Jesus Christ......I gave birth 3 times naturally and that wasn't as painful.

If it's you little toe strap it up now. I didn't do it for long enough and now my toe is twisted and still swollen and sore. Been to docs and nothing they can do :(

I've broken 2 toes. Very painful and lasts for weeks. I'd pop to your local injury clinic and get checked though. It does get better.

It is EXTREMELY painful. Get it seen too, no matter what people say. I broke my toe a couple of decades ago and still have pain occasionally, like an old woman when it rains/damp! I'm told it is Post-Traumatic Arthritis. I was an idiot not to get it seen too, strapped and whatever might have helped back then because I walked on it and think I may have compounded the injury.

Thanks all. Despite the impressive bruising and swelling I don't think it's painful enough to be broken. I'll stay off it today and keep it iced, I've taken Difene and am lashing the arnica cream onto it. I'll see how it is tomorrow.

I didn't find it extremely painful, like it was very painful but completely bearable. The pain did go on for over 8 weeks though, that was the bit that got me!

You should get it seen to, I broke my ankle and it wasn't sore apart from when I tried walking on it, I waited 2 days before going to A&E which confirmed it.

My mother drove to a Dr surgery with a broken ankle, he told her it wasn't broken. Three days later she was in surgery getting the badly broken ankle pinned!
