Possible fetal defect at pregnancy scan
Possible fetal defect at pregnancy scan
During the week we got the scary news that our baby might have a heart defect. The scan showed that one valve could be smaller/bigger than the other. The Consultant is referring us to a fetal cardiology specialist in Dublin (we live 3 hours away) to make sure and see where we go from there. We're now waiting on an appointment. Nothing showed up in the anatomy scan a few weeks ago so we thought everything was okay, now it feels like our world has been turned upside down. Just so scared as to what this could mean. Has anyone been in a similar situation? So worried
Re: Possible fetal defect at pregnancy scan
There's a support group on Facebook if you want to join? my daughter has a heart defect and she had open heart surgery last year. She wasn't diagnosed until she was three though.
Re: Possible fetal defect at pregnancy scan
Also it is a terribly scary time but all the cardiologists and surgeons in Crumlin are fab and the heart centre is state of the art. You will be well looked after as will your baby x

Re: Possible fetal defect at pregnancy scan
I was a cardio defect baby
Was diagnosed at 8 weeks & operated on at 2.5 then discharged from the consultant when I was 4
I never see a cardiologist now unless I'm pregnant
Google only gives you worst case scenario stay away from it
Hope everything goes well for you & your baby

Re: Possible fetal defect at pregnancy scan
I was referred to Dublin when pregnant with my son due to concerns over his heart so I know how worried you must be. Try to keep your concerns contained until you know more as there is nothing you can do for now and Google is not your friend with so little information right now.
In my case it turned out my son's heart is fine so I can assure you there are positive outcomes. Even if your baby has an issue, you have time to prepare and for the doctors to come up with a plan of action rather than an unexpected issue to deal with at birth. Wishing you all the best.

Thanks ladies. I'm just terrified and thinking the worst. Up until now when the baby kicked I was beaming every time with joy....now every time they kick it reminds me of the bad news. And I feel so guilty for thinking that way
I know we don't know for certain yet but the sonographer wouldn't be sending us to Dublin if he wasn't concerned.
I'm comforted to hear your positive stories, thank you. January I hope your little girl is doing great now.
The specialist we are meeting is in the Coombe. Any advice on parking there etc? I heard it can be very busy? Thank you.

You'll most probably be meeting Dr. Orla Franklin so, she's amazing, she is my DD's consultant (who by the way is doing fab you'd never think she had had open heart surgery, her scar is almost gone and everything). Parking can be tight, but you usually get a spot after a few minutes of waiting.Scared wrote:Thanks ladies. I'm just terrified and thinking the worst. Re: Possible fetal defect at pregnancy scan
My DS1 had/has a congenital heart defect. It wasn't picked up during pg. he was 1 at diagnosis and 2.5 when he had his operation. It wasn't open heart it was keyhole, he was one of the first group to get keyhole.
He's now 14.5 and no issues at all.

Re: Possible fetal defect at pregnancy scan
Orla Franklin is a lovely, lovely person. DD didn't have a very serious heart issue so can't help with that but we did get told at our 20 week scan she could be brain damaged. Things have worked out great for her but I know only too well what that worry feels like in pregnancy.
Don't feel any guilt, you will feel every emotion under the sun over the next while & all are valid & normal. Take time out for yourself & try not to worry too much until you've seen the consultant. Stay talking to your DH & mind each other x

Thanks ladies. It gives me hope to hear positive stories. So glad all of your children are doing well.
Does anyone know what day Dr Orla Franklin has her clinic in the Coombe? It says it's one day a week but I can't find out what day. It would just be good to have an idea of what day we might be going. Thanks.
I'm sure me being so upset isn't good for the baby, I'm trying to be positive. Hopefully if there is an issue it isn't a big one.

Thank you January. Hopefully we will get an appointment for this week so. Was worried it'd be a Monday or Tuesday and we'd miss the boat until next week. Fingers crossed we will be seen this week, the waiting is difficult.

Re: Possible fetal defect at pregnancy scan
It's a thurs afternoon. I've been where you are.
Bring someone with you to the clinic. Even if all is fine, it's very overwhelming. There are 4 specialists there and they tell you at the start that they will talk over you, to each other. It's disconcerting because you can't help but listen and try to analyse what they are saying
I was completely overwhelmed and even though they said it was fine, I was so stressed out when we walked out. I didn't feel like I had been told anything but the reality was it was too difficult to process everything. I rem walking out not knowing what was next. I still don't to be honest!
Best of luck. I hope, like us yours turns out to be nothing.
