Work at Home Ground rules
Work at Home Ground rules
Hi there
My DH works from home since March 2020.
My son now is starting a job wfh too.
Given he has had poor time management up to this work what ground rules work when 2 are WFH in the 1 household

Re: Work at Home Ground rules
In what sense? Will he be in his bedroom working or in the main living area?

Re: Work at Home Ground rules
I’m not sure what you mean but one would be they stick to the room they are working from for phone calls - no walking around the house. And no shushing others in the house.
Re: Work at Home Ground rules
We both work at home most of the time. I’m always mindful that I am working in my children’s home and it’s a place where they should not feel they can’t make a sound because I’m working. I stay in my work space and don’t roam around the house when on the phone.

Thanks.
Work spaces are separate.
What about break times?
I'm not the inhouse chef?
How does lunch breaks work?

Re: Work at Home Ground rules
Dh has been WFH fulltime since March 2020 plus I'm at home fulltime not working as well. Work stays in the office, if the door is closed he's working so only enter if necessary though if I'm leaving the house, I'll stick my head in the door and let him know. We try to keep noise outside the office door to a minimum but he uses noise-cancelling headphones when on a call. Coffee/lunch breaks he uses as a movement break and makes his own sandwich or whatever, I'm not a chef either.

Sure you’re not the chef in their work so this is no different.
Re: Work at Home Ground rules
Any tips on time management which would help a job starter who has never experienced and won't experience an office environment?
Re: Work at Home Ground rules
Let him find his own way, every job starter meets a new environment and has to learn to navigate it themselves without their parents.

Re: Work at Home Ground rules
Suggest he starts around 9, takes a 15 minute tea break at 11, lunch from 1-2 and finishes at 5 - if that all fits in with his hours. You are not there to provide the sandwiches or make the tea. If there's food in the house both your Dh and Ds are old enough to sort their own lunches.
Re: Work at Home Ground rules
He is 20.
I had not banked on him moving home to work.
Being away for college was so different.
I feel a cloud of bad habits about to kick off.
Re: Work at Home Ground rules
If he was living away from home for the last 2 years he must be used to organising and taking care of himself. Don't get involved. Lay ground rules for him living at home (cleaning up after himself, shopping/food, finance, laundry ... whatever you feel appropriate). Then leave him at it. If he and your dh clash because they're both working from home then let them work it out.
