WWYd about invite to birthday party late at night for 9yo

#1 Post by teapot »

Hi all

Going anon as would be outing myself (unless its more common than I realised)

DD has been invited to a party for one of her school friends - they are turning 9 and its the night of the Late Late Toy Show - so we will need to collect her after it....its at the party child's house from 8.30pm (pizza first) until 11.30 or whenever its over

Dh thinks its a family night in front of telly and we don't usually end up watching it all as we fall asleep.

She has heard about it from friend (as formal invites not out yet - just a heads up from the mum to me on a night out where I was part of a group and non committal.) and really wants to go.

Looking for your thoughts?

If all of mine were invited to parties for the Late Late toy show I'd be delighted. I have zero interest.

Don't see the issue. My 9 year old would be thrilled with that invite.

I'd be ok with it. If she's wrecked they can call you to collect her earlier.

I’d have no issue with that for a 9 year old. It’s a nice idea, something different.

I wouldn’t consider the toy show a family night, but we don’t have a tradition around the toy show here.

I think it's a great idea for a party.
I don't like the Toy Show so if it got me out of watching it I'd be happy.

I also think it’s a great idea and she probably won’t fall asleep when she’s with her friends (no offence!)

Well it would be my idea of hell if it were in my house as I love that night to chill out but if someone wanted to invite a bunch of kids to a birthday party I don't see a problem with it. My DD would love it. I'd hate the hassle of going to collect them though

Another one here who would be delighted if it meant I didn't have to watch the toy show myself. I wouldn't see a problem with it if your child is able to stay up until 11.30 pm. Mine couldn't make it past half eight at that age. But presumably the parents would ring you to collect earlier if your DD was fading.

That sounds like a great party for a 9 year old. I would have loved that at her age.

Plenty of kids that age have sleepovers. Can’t see the issue really.

I'd have no problem with my 9yo DD doing that. Only problem is she doesn't handle tiredness well and would eat you without salt when over tired. I'd be expecting a phone call to remove my devil child from the hosts house!!

+1. Off topic but I could never sit through it myself. I'd be delighted to outsource it.

At the end of the day, if you dd wants to go to it, it will be hard to suggest she stays home to watch it with the family. She'll doubtfully enjoy it at home thinking of her gang of friends together.

Would it be a compromise to record it and watch it as a family the following night? Absolute bonus that you'd get to start it at 6pm and fast forward the ads.
