Thank you all.

I feel that he is protected in some way and there has to have been a complaint made about him before.

He is "barred" from all Xmas parties, social events. He felt a young trainee up and made disgusting comments to her about 5 years ago (before my time) and rumour has it, she made a complaint. . Yet, he is still here and his behaviour is sill deplorable. I have been told he has "toned it down" a little.

When he says things why don't you say there and then ,don't speak to me like that please, call him out on it , if he says its only a bit of fun/harmless etc , reply with well I'm not laughing , memo like this do so because they get away with it , I'd also report him

What a creep. I personally wouldn't say anything to him but I'd definitely report him.?

I wouldn't call him out or converse with him at all on the subject, I would deal with it through the proper channels. It sounds like you are more senior and older than most of the other women affected so I think it's up to you to set the ball rolling

By calling him out on it there and then in public and preferably in front of co workers ,lets him know you aren't tolerating it, the last thing men like him expect women subjected to their unwelcome jibes is for women to be vocal about it in public, I would also report him

I really wouldn’t recommend that. Men like that thrive on getting a reaction. Report him. When his job is on the line he’ll have plenty of time to realise that crap isn’t tolerated.

I would also tell him to his face, straight, that I don't appreciate it and to not do it again with me.

I have dealt with a similar situation, had a straight talk with him, it was also my direct manager. Often they do it because they're getting away with but if confronted they will retreat, with you at least. If others will tolerate it he'll keep trying but if more people tell him directly they don't want to hear it, he'll soon get the picture.

I wouldn't assume that confronting him would mean he would reatreat or that he'd soon get the message. He would more likely just concentrate his actions on more vulnerable members of staff. Sounds like it's a bit late to be trying to get him to get the message anyway. He needs to be reported.

Well being silent certainly isn't working, by being vocal about it will hopefully encourage others to do the same, isn't that what we teach our children if somebody says or does something they spdont like to them, be vocal and draw attention to it, bullies get off on victims keeping quiet

He's not a child and nor is the OP. It's a professional environment and it needs to be dealt with in a professional way.

I think you should report him without calling him out on it, leave that to HR to deal with. If you call him out on it there's a strong chance he's suddenly start finding fault with your work and make your work life more difficult.

He will probably do it anyway when he finds out who reported him , at least if he is called out on it in public first there are witnesses

The company policies should include provisions to ensure no retaliation.
If he did start to do that, there would be a formal complaint on record , and it would be easy to draw link between the two.

Our company had a 'training' day on bullying and sexual harassment in the workplace. Everyone had to do it. They outlined how to deal with bullying and harassment , including sexual harassment. First step was to try and resolve the issue with the colleague. If this did not work or you felt you could not resolve the issue directly then you went to the line manager. If the problem is with the line manager then you went to next in command. If this did not work or you felt it would not work then you go to HR and put in a formal complaint. The HR department could try and deal with it, initiate mediation with involved parties or go through a formal complaints procedure. The company that did the training day were an external company who specialised in the area.
